Key Components of Receptacle Photodiode

P-N Junction

Formed from p-type (holes) and n-type (electrons) semiconductor layers (e.g., Silicon, InGaAs) where light is absorbed.

Depletion Region

The electric field-rich area between the p-n layers where electron-hole pairs separate when light hits.

Semiconductor Material

Silicon (Si), Germanium (Ge), or Indium Gallium Arsenide (InGaAs) are common, chosen for specific wavelengths (e.g., InGaAs for near-infrared in fiber).

Basic Principles of Receptacle Photodiode

Receptacle photodiodes work based on the principle of the photoelectric effect, which describes the emission of electrons from a material when it absorbs photons (particles of light) with sufficient energy. The basic operation of a receptacle photodiode involves the conversion of light energy into electrical current.

The structure of a receptacle photodiode consists of a p-n junction, where the p-type and n-type semiconductor materials are brought together. The p-type region has an excess of positively charged holes, while the n-type region has an excess of negatively charged electrons. This junction creates a depletion region, which acts as a barrier to the current flow in the absence of light.

When light of sufficient energy (wavelength) is incident on the receptacle photodiode, photons can penetrate the depletion region. The energy from the photons is absorbed by the semiconductor material, causing electron-hole pairs to be generated. The photons transfer their energy to the electrons in the valence band, allowing them to break free from their atomic bonds and become free electrons. This process is known as absorption.

Applications of Receptacle Photodiode

Electrical Isolation
Receptacle photodiodes are used in opt couplers to electrically isolate two circuits. It isolates any low voltage sensitive circuit from a high voltage circuit. The circuits are optically coupled and electrically isolated.
Renewable Energy
Receptacle photodiodes are extensively used to convert solar energy into electrical energy to power our daily use equipment. They are used at the domestic as well as industrial level. Hundreds of panels each containing arrays of receptacle photodiodes are used in a single solar plant to produce electrical energy.
Optical Communication
High-speed receptacle photodiodes such as PIN photodiodes are used for high-speed optical communication using fiber optic cables.
Building Safety
It is also used in fire and smoke alarms to prevent any kind of fire hazard in a building. Its light sensor can detect smoke.

Medical Instruments

Receptacle photodiodes also find multiple applications in medical Instruments such as CT scans, PET scanners, sample analyzers, etc.

Burglar alarm

In a burglar alarm, there is a light source fixated in such a way that it constantly strikes the receptacle photodiode and generates a constant current. If something or someone passes through and causes obstruction to the light, the diode current falls and triggers the alarm.

Counter

The receptacle photodiode can be used to count objects that pass between it and a continuous source of light.

FAQ

Q: How does a receptacle photodiode differ from a standard photodiode?

A: Unlike standard photodiodes (which require external optical coupling), receptacle photodiodes include a built-in connector port. This eliminates the need for manual alignment with fiber ends, reduces signal loss, and speeds up system assembly/maintenance.

Q: What are the key applications of receptacle photodiodes?

A: They are widely used in fiber optic communication systems (e.g., FTTH, data centers), optical sensing (distance/position detection), industrial automation (fiber optic switches), and medical devices (optical diagnostics with fiber probes).

Q: What optical connector types are common for receptacle photodiodes?

A: Popular connector interfaces include LC (small form-factor, high density), SC (push-pull, low insertion loss), ST (twist-lock, rugged for industrial use), and FC (threaded, high precision for test equipment).

As one of the most professional receptacle photodiode manufacturers and suppliers in China, we're featured by quality products and good price. Please rest assured to buy customized receptacle photodiode from our factory.
